EMC Testing Glossary
Attenuation
The amount of signal reduction (in dB) provided by a filter or shielded enclosure.
CISPR
International Special Committee for Radio Interference
Conducted Emission (CE)
EMI coupled transferred through power, signal or control lines.
Electromagnetic Disturbance (EMI)
Unwanted electromagnetic noise that degrades the performance of electrical and electronic equipment.
Electromagnetic Vulnerability (EMV)
The characteristics of electrical or electronic equipment that cause performance degradation.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
Transfer of electric charge between two objects components in proximity.
EMI Filter
A circuit or device that provides electomagnetic noise suppression for an electronic device.
Equipment Under Test (EUT)
The component or equipment being tested.
Faraday Shield
Conductive material used to contain an electric field. The shield provides electrostatic shielding while passing electromagnetic signals.
Ferrites
Magnets used to absorb EMI interference on wires and cables.
Insertion Loss
The amount of attenuation provided by a filter.
Radio-Frequency Interference (RFI)
Interference within the radio-frequency (RF) spectrum. Term used interchangeably with EMI.
Shielded Room
A room that is EMI-free by applying shielding to the floor, walls and ceiling, and by suppressing interference on the incoming power lines.
Shielding Gasket
A foam or metal material that provides electromagnetic shielding across a seam or gap in an electronic enclosure.
