EMC Testing FAQ

What are the typical EMC testing categories?
EMC test categories include: Conducted Emissions (CE), Radiated Emissions (RE), Conducted Susceptibility (CS) and Radiated Susceptibility (RS) testing.

Where is EMC testing performed?
At certified EMC testing labs. Shielded test chambers or open-area test sites (OATS) are used depending on specific EMC testing requirements.

Why should EMC testing be done at a certified lab?
Due to the proliferation of cell phones, pagers, and other radio-frequency sources, it may be difficult to conduct accurate tests using an OATS facility. As such, a certified EMC/EMI test lab with shielding is needed to attenuate area emissions.

What equipment is furnished as part of an EMC test?
The test device as well any associated cables, interfaces, power supplies and other components needed to simulate actual device operation.
